Former high school chapter students are taking the KTKI program with them to college and starting the first college KTKI chapters! Meet our leaders:

Amy Johnson
In March I traveled with my College’s Alternative Spring Break program to Pascagoula in Jackson County Mississippi. Jackson County was directly in the path of Hurricane Katrina and received the brunt of the storm. Jackson County is also the poorest county Mississippi, the poorest state in America because of this and delays in distributing money allotted to help rebuilding efforts thousands of people living in this area still have not been able to get back in their homes or are living in in homes with unhealthy conditions. I worked with Operation TLC and Mississippi Home Again, two grassroots organizations started by two amazing women that saw the need not just to give people food and trailers but to get people back in their homes and took it upon themselves to make this happen. They are now busy with the 100 Homes in 100 days campaign which will end on July 4th. It was an eye-opening experience to see, even almost two years after Katrina, families struggling to get back in their homes, piles of debris still about, foundations that once were homes. I even came across water damaged police files lying on the ground like common rubbish.

The box was delivered to Pineville Elementary School in Pass Christian of Harrison County Mississippi. Pass Christian is right on the coast during Katrina everything in Pass Christian within a half mile in-land was leveled, 7,500 of 8,000 homes were damaged or distroyed. Driving along the coast in Pass Christian I saw slabs of cement that only had minor relics of what they once were to let me know gas stations and hotels used to line the coast.

Anastasia Ryan
Anastasia will be attending Brandeis University in the Spring. She decided to spend the Fall semester abroad participating in the college level Kenya Internship. Through Global Routes, Anastasia is now volunteering in a remote village teaching English to children in local schools. She packed with her student-created picture books and educational supplies from Kids to Kids International to help her teach the students.
