Few amino acids are essential for a body. Serotonin and melatonin are also essential amino acids which are found in protein and these are neurotransmitters. There are also messengers which are needed for brain which helps in regulating the sleep cycles and the moods of a person.

Your brain needs serotonin to make melatonin. When either of these amino acids are deficit, there will be irregular sleep patterns and few experience restorative deep sleeps. If a person is increasing the consumption of these amino acids, serotonin and melatonin by taking it in their diet or by taking supplements one can easily improve their sleep. Tryptophan is not produced by the body and this must be taken in the form of supplements either from food or through supplement so that they produce the neurotransmitters. This Tryptophan is precursor which is needed for 5-HTP. This is also a precursor of serotonin and melatonin. Either tryptophan or 5-HTP should be taken from food or through supplement, so that it helps in increasing the levels of serotonin as well as melatonin.
Serotonin and Melatonin
Serotonin is one of the neurotransmitter which helps in increasing the happy feelings like happiness and this is a monoamine. This helps in digestion of food and regulating the mood. Serotonin is majorly seen in the brain cells as well as the digestive systems. They are transported from brain to the blood platelets in the flow of blood. This cannot cross the brain- blood barrier and this serotonin should be produced in the brain. In the digestive system it is produced in cells and is taken through platelets from the protein transporters. Tryptophan is taken from proteins which can be obtained from meat and through some vegetables or starch foods. After this is digested it undergoes several phases and then it becomes 5-HTP and then this is then converted into melatonin from serotonin. Tryptophan and 5-HTP should be converted into serotonin through digestion. Tryptophan must be transported through brain after it is synthesized as melatonin. In pineal gland, Melatonin is synthesised and the levels are low in ambient system. The main effects of melatonin are that there will be irregular in the sleep patterns. There will be low levels of melatonin, then, the person experiences restless sleep and it even causes insomnia. Other brain conditions such as Alzheimer are seen when the levels of melatonin are low.
Melatonin for brain health and Alzheimer’s
When the melatonin levels are really low in brain it leads to Alzheimer’s. The levels of melatonin which are in brain and spine decrease as the age increases. When Alzheimer’s increases, melatonin is seen. Melatonin hormone is low in patients who are suffering with Alzheimer’s. In few patients there will be low levels of melatonin and Alzheimer’s symptoms are seen. Levels of serotonin as well as melatonin can be increased by taking the supplement through 5-HTP.
